Belardo
Facts on Belardo
BELARDO
A champion at two years old and a Lockinge Stakes winner at four years this good-looking son of Lope De Vega had no shortage of ability.
Some smart form as a two year old seen him turn up to race in Newmarket’s Dewhurst Stakes, the race which traditionally decides the annual championship honours for the colts.
Racing in the colours of Prince Faisal he not only collected the money he also caught the attention of Sheikh Mohammed who purchased a share and it was in the Royal Blue colours that he continued his racing career.
While Belardo did not win as a 3 year old he did run with credit and it was only the Champion miler Solow who finished in front of him in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on his final start of his classic year.
As a four year old Belardo reappeared with a win in a conditions event at Doncaster before finishing fourth in a Sandown Group 2. Reunited in his next start with Andrea Atzeni the Jockey who rode him in all his starts as a two year old it was back to winning ways and he ran out an impressive winner of Newbury's Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.
Royal Ascot was the next stop and Belardo perhaps ran the race of his life finishing seconnd and only beaten half a length by the double American champion Tepin.
Stephen recalls “Tepin was a true champion and heavily fancied to win, however Belardo give her a great race and we were all so proud of him”.
