King of Steel
King Of Steel arrived in Roger Varin’s yard at the beginning of his 3-year old season. This striking looking son of Wootton Bassett had a big reputation to go along with his big frame.
A planned start in the premier Derby trial the Dante Stakes was aborted when he played up in the stalls, so when he turned at Epsom on the first Saturday of June he was not only having his first start for Varian Stable but his first start of the year and only his third run overall.
It was therefore testament to his ability and his courage that he burst through a gap on the rail and went clear of the field with two furlongs left to run. That he was caught and passed in the shadow of the post did not diminish the thrill he give us.
King of Steel followed up this near miss with an easy Royal Ascot victory and a notable third against the older horses in the King George and Queen Elizbeth Stakes. A credable run in the Irish Champion Stakes was the prelude to an emontional victory in the Englaish equevilent on Champions day.
